Harun Warui

Dr. Harun Warui is a researcher, policy advocate, and practitioner passionate about transforming Kenya’s food systems through agroecology, soil regeneration, and environmental justice. With more than 20 years of experience bridging science, policy, and grassroots action, his work focuses on building agricultural systems that are not only productive but also safe, equitable, and democratically governed.

He currently leads the Agroecology and Food Rights Programme at Heinrich Böll Stiftung (HBS) in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. In this role, he works closely with the Route to Food Initiative (RTFI) to advance pesticide regulation reform, amplify civil society advocacy, and shape policy debates on highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs). His efforts also extend to initiatives on soil health, seed sovereignty, and farmer agency, all aimed at supporting just and regenerative food systems.

His core areas of focus include:

  • Agroecology & regenerative farming
  • Soil health & ecosystem restoration
  • Pesticide policy reform & input transitions
  • Food sovereignty & farmer agency
  • Environmental & social justice

Harun believes that meaningful transitions in agriculture must centre community knowledge, safeguard ecological integrity, and uphold justice as non-negotiable foundations for sustainable development.
